SENIOR SECONDARY PEDAGOGY

Anne Sullivan Macy

“Education in the light of present-day knowledge and need calls for some spirited and creative innovations both in the substance and the purpose of current pedagogy.”

At Bosco, we strongly believe that learners should be allowed to explore rather than be instructed about the already known facts. Education is imparted in such a way that it provides ample opportunities to learners at secondary and senior secondary level to discover, explore and invent new possibilities for their learning. The school lays emphasis on fostering creativity, innovation and scientific temperament in the learners.

Features of Pedagogies used at Bosco :

  • Child Centric
  • Focus on Constructive , Experiential and Collaborative Learning
  • Flexibility in pedagogy to address the needs of the learners
  • Encourage learners to find answers to critical questions
  • Promote multisensory learning to make learning more joyful and effective
  • Multidisciplinary pedagogies for divergent exposures
  • Learning based on Life Skills and values

The concept of teaching methods includes pedagogies and strategies used in the classroom for teaching.

Competency Based Learnings

CBL is used to empower students and provide them with a meaningful and positive learning experience. It places the learners at the center and actively engages them in the learning process. It emphasizes real-world applications of knowledge and skills and the authenticity of the learning experience. It integrates higher order thinking skills, interdisciplinary approaches and problem-solving as these are essential to the modern world.

Art Integrated Pedagogy

Art is integrated with education, it helps the child apply art-based enquiry, investigation and exploration, critical thinking and creativity for a deeper understanding of the concepts/topics.

Experiential Learning

Experiential learning is an engaged learning process whereby students ‘learn by doing’ and by reflecting on the experience. Relating and demonstrating through real-life situations sparks the interest of the learners and makes them more involved.

Story Telling

Learners are engaged using Story Telling as it creates a sense of connection, builds curiosity and imagination, helps to remember things better, makes listeners more open to learning and conveys complex ideas in simple ways.

Joyful Learning

Facilitators make engaging classrooms where students feel happy and comfortable. It helps to lower feelings of stress and increase positive attitude about learning.

Gamification

The structural elements of games are especially suited to serve this current generation of learners. It’s a different paradigm of pedagogy to engage the learners. A set of activities and processes are utilised to solve problems by using the characteristics of game elements.

Inter Disciplinary Linkage

Interdisciplinary instruction helps students develop their cognitive abilities and develop appreciation for the differences between disciplines on how to approach a problem and their discipline specific rules regarding viable evidence. This leads to a broader understanding of the issue under investigation.

Flipped Classrooms

It inverts the traditional learning experience as the lectures are shared outside of class time for individual review as homework and classroom time is reserved for students to complete assignments and activities.

Reciprocal Teaching

The students and the teacher go through four steps of summarising, question generating, clarifying and predicting. It helps students develop interpersonal communication skills since they have to interact with other students and the teacher.

Inductive and Deductive

Deductive reasoning works from the more general to the more specific. Inductive reasoning  moves from specific observations to broader generalizations and theories. Students begin with specific observations and measures, begin to detect patterns and regularities, formulate some tentative hypotheses that can be explored and finally end up developing some general conclusions or theories.

Collaborative

Collaborative learning is a method of teaching and learning in which students team together to explore a significant question or create a meaningful project. It is a process of working together to achieve a common goal.

Socratic Questioning

Thoughtful questions are posed to the learners by the facilitator so as to turn a lecture into a guided discussion.

Brain Storming

Brain Storming is a group thinking process enkindled by creativity. Facilitators encourage students to focus on a topic and contribute to the free flow of ideas. The participants in the process of brainstorming, present and reveal new ideas as potential solutions for a specific problem. In this process, brainstorming helps the stimulation of the mind towards creative problem-solving.

Lecture and Discussion

Teacher formally delivers a carefully planned expository address on a specific topic followed by discussion with the students to strengthen their understanding.

Demonstration

Teacher teaches students using demonstration method in a systematic and a step by step process. This strategy improves the understanding of complex skills and principles. Psychomotor objective is easily achieved through this method as the students see the process live and understand how to apply theoretical knowledge practically.
